Personal Interests

In my spare time I enjoy reading , watching films and TV and listening to music (both recorded and live).

I spend a lot of time with computers both at home and at work and use the Internet for research and recreation. I have built, upgraded and maintained computers for myself, friends and family for many years.

Getting out and about, I enjoy walking in the local area and where time and weather allows more challenging routes usually in the Lake District or Snowdonia.

Despite being scared of heights I have completed some challenging scrambles including Crib Goch in Snowdonia, Striding Edge, Swirral Edge and Sharp Edge in the Lake District.

Although I don’t class myself as a photographer, these outdoor activities do give me chance to wield my camera and get some good shots.

I was the treasurer for the local branch of The Vikings re-enactment society for several years. During this time I learned how to safely use a variety of hand weapons and eventually reached a level where I could train newer members. I took part in combat and “living history” shows for English Heritage and educational visits to schools until other commitments took over.

This hobby also gave me the opportunity to take part as an extra in the filming of several documentaries, a couple of TV shows and one feature film.

I have an interest in British Folklore and Customs and have re-published several out of copyright books on the subject through lulu.com.

I was an elected shop steward for SATA at Shop Direct, This has given me access to a range of courses to enable me to help my colleagues in particular and the workplace in general. I believe that a well-run union branch is an asset to the employer rather than a thorn in its side.
